Welcome to Year 5!

So far this year, the children have immersed themselves within our topics of ‘Warriors Unleashed’, ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ and ‘Fly me to the Moon’. The children have fully engaged themselves with our fourth topic ‘Fire Starter’ which is based around Dragons. For the first few days, they have created their own mythical beast to include within Cressida Cowell’s book, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.

Throughout this unit of work, the children will develop their artistic and technological skills to allow them the freedom to enjoy their learning and experience a variety of opportunities for independence. They have selected to create a non-chronological report to form the ‘Salfords’ Book of Dragons’ and to write a narrative based on George and the Dragon which will enhance their knowledge of our patron, St. George. We have planned to include statistics about dragons within Maths to broaden their skills regarding how to read and interpret charts and graphs.

To deepen their understanding and to build on these creative elements in school, we have included several enrichment tasks in their new homework menu. Please take the time to support your child when completing their homework to share their excitement of this topic.

After utilising several different genres of writing within Guided Reading recently, the children have appreciated this. Whilst you spend time with your child at home, please encourage them to broaden the range of books they read with you. We also thank you for your support and dedication to allow the children valuable and additional reading time at home.

Our PE day continues to be on a Thursday and that the Year 5 dance performance (at the Harlequin) is on the eve of Thursday 8th March. The children have been brilliant with remembering their PE kits but please encourage them to pack sensible clothing as the weather is due to be so variable this time of year.. If your child does not have a Salfords PE kit (as it is being ordered or misplaced), could you please try to ensure that blue or black coloured items of clothing are used.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the continued support you give as parents to our Year 5 children and Salfords Primary School. Our pupils try to show as many school values as possible on a daily basis because they aspire to be great role models for our younger children!

If you ever have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact either class teacher.

Thank you and 'Be your best'!

Mr Llewelyn / Mrs Balls
