Nursery - Hatchlings and Fledglings

   

Welcome to Nursery

Our Nursery classes welcome children through our doors from two years old. Our Nursery has a Key Person system in place and your child’s Key person will introduce themselves to you once you start with us. The nursery is led by Miss Cheeseright, who works alongside a strong team of Early Years practitioners. To find out more about our team click here.

The Nursery classes follow and deliver the EYFS curriculum by steering the learning towards childrens’ passions and interests. We have overarching project titles that allow us to do this. 

Trips and Visits

Nursery children have planned trips and visitors to enhance their learning within the projects that they follow. These will include visits from ‘People Who Help Us’ and local community trips. 

Literacy,Reading and Phonics

It is crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading. Reading consists of two dimensions: language comprehension and word reading. Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. It only develops when adults talk with children about the world around them and the books (stories and non-fiction) they read with them, and enjoy rhymes, poems and songs together. 

At Salfords, we follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme to teach your children the knowledge they need to become confident readers and, eventually, confident writers. Your child will receive daily phonics sessions. These will be delivered in Nursery through short bursts of small group teaching when children are ready and through our planned continuous provision activities for children to learn through play.   In addition, we enjoy phonics games daily that teach children the listening and sound discrimination skills they need in order to read. It is essential that you read to your child daily.

During our ‘Talk through stories’ sessions, (which provide the opportunity for children to really explore key texts, understand the principle of the story, learn new vocabulary and explore new characters), we will focus on one key text at a time which the children will become very familiar with. 

Book Changing and Home Learning

Children are given a school planner for communication with parents and recording home learning. Children in Nursery receive a book for enjoyment (chosen by themselves from the Library). These are changed weekly and our expectation is for parents to read and record in the planners daily.  We change books every Monday and Thursday so please make sure that your child comes to school with their planners and books on these days. 

Tapestry

All children and parents are set up with a Tapestry account when they join us. Tapestry is used as a communication tool with parents to share WOW moments that happen both with us at school and yourselves at home.

Healthy Snacks and Drinks

All children should bring a labelled water bottle to school every day. It is essential that bottles contain only water, not squash or juice as this supports the development of good oral hygiene. We also promote healthy eating in order to establish lifelong healthy food choices. 

Snack Time

Nursery children are provided with a daily snack bar where they choose and serve themselves a healthy range of snacks. 

Lunches

Nursery children enjoy lunch in our whole school dining hall. Parents can pay for their children to have a hot lunch or they can bring a packed lunch with them.  Please can we remind you that we are a Nut Free School, so please do not pack products in the lunchboxes that may contain nuts; this includes chocolate spread. 

Woodland Discovery & Cookery Club

Nursery children have the opportunity to venture down to our Woodland Discovery area and do a cooking activity every week. Cooking Club takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Woodland Discovery will take place on a Wednesday. Please ensure children come into school on a Wednesday with warm wet weather clothing, including a named pair of wellington boots.

Beach Hut 

Children in Nursery have timetabled opportunities to access specific weekly foci linked to their individual interests and next steps. This may be opportunities to work within a small group learning to share, taking part in a cookery activity or building and balancing activities. 

Indoor and Outdoor Learning 

Children get to choose their ‘Learning Time’ through Continuous Provision. They can decide if they want to go inside or outside and are encouraged to visit every area of learning,  independently at least once. The inside space covers all seven areas of learning within the EYFS curriculum and is designed to ensure children access all areas of learning through play. Each area of the provision has ‘I can’ stands which are directly linked to a learning objective. These I can stands ensure that the children are accessing purposeful, meaningful learning opportunities in every area of the provision.
