Welcome to Reception

Early Years is led by Mrs Trinidad, who is also the Wrens Class along with Mrs Cross. Robins Class teacher is Ms Hussain.

Reception and Nursery classes follow and deliver the EYFS curriculum by steering the learning towards childrens’ passions and interests. We have overarching project titles that allow us to do this.

Trips and Visits

Reception children have planned trips and visitors to enhance their learning within the projects that they follow. These will include visits from ‘People Who Help Us’ and local community trips. 

Literacy,Reading and Phonics

It is crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading. Reading consists of two dimensions: language comprehension and word reading. Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. It only develops when adults talk with children about the world around them and the books (stories and non-fiction) they read with them, and enjoy rhymes, poems and songs together. 

At Salfords, we follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme to give your children the knowledge they need to become confident readers and, eventually, confident writers. Your child will receive daily phonics sessions.  In addition, we enjoy phonics games that teach children the listening and sound discrimination skills they need in order to read. We communicate with you the sounds that your child is learning and send home phonics reading books weekly.  It is essential that you either practise sounds or hear your child read daily.

During our ‘Talk through stories’ sessions, (which provide the opportunity for children to really explore key texts, understand the principle of the story, learn new vocabulary and explore new characters), we will focus on one key text at a time with which the children will become very familiar.

Book Changing and Home Learning

Children are given a school planner for communication with parents and recording home learning. Children in Reception receive a book for enjoyment (chosen by themselves from the Library) and a book or sounds matched to their reading ability. These are changed weekly and our expectation is for parents to read and record in the planners daily.  

We change books every Monday, so please make sure that your child comes to school with their planners and books on this day. 

Parent Workshops

At Salfords Primary School, we are committed to working in partnership with our families and want to provide you with the tools to be able to support your child's learning at home. Reception parents are invited to half termly workshops where we will discuss and share how to support your child's learning in different key areas, such as RWI, Maths and Writing. 

Tapestry

All children and parents are set up with a Tapestry account when they join us. Tapestry is used as a communication tool with parents to share WOW moments that happen both with us at school and yourselves at home. 

Healthy Snacks and Drinks

All children should bring a labelled water bottle to school every day. It is essential that bottles contain only water, not squash or juice as this supports the development of good oral hygiene. We also promote healthy eating in order to establish lifelong healthy food choices. Reception children are provided with free fruit for snack time. If you would like your child to also have milk, please register online with Cool Milk: https://www.coolmilk.com/

Please can we remind you that we are a Nut Aware School, so we ask that you do not pack products in the lunchboxes that may contain nuts; this includes chocolate spread. 

Woodland Discovery & Cookery Club

Reception children have the opportunity to venture down to our Woodland Discovery area, or do a cooking activity linked to our topic, every Friday afternoon. 

Please ensure your child has weather appropriate clothing in school for Fridays, including named pair of wellington boots.
